🚗 Car Seats In Tenerife & Getting From The Airport Safely
🚗 CAR SEATS IN TENERIFE & GETTING TO AND FROM TENERIFE AIRPORT SAFELY
One Of The MOST Important Family Travel Topics
This is probably one of the biggest family travel topics we speak to parents about 💙
Because honestly… when families arrive in Tenerife, most automatically assume: # “the transfer company or taxi will provide the correct car seat.” 😅
Unfortunately… that’s not always the case.
And while we don’t want to scare families, we DO want parents to understand the reality of travelling with children safely in Spain.
⚠️ The Biggest Problem Families Face
The hardest part? Many:
- taxi drivers
- transfer companies
- and even car rental companies
simply do not fully understand:
- correct car seat sizing
- proper fitting
- rear-facing recommendations
- or what seat is actually suitable for your child.
Sadly, we’ve seen situations where:
- very young babies have been offered booster seats 😳
- under 1s given forward-facing seats
- or families simply handed “whatever seat was available.”
This doesn’t mean companies are intentionally unsafe… but many simply:
- don’t specialise in child safety
- don’t understand the level of family travel safety many 2026 families now expect
- or treat car seats as “an added extra” rather than a genuine safety product.
👶 Understanding Car Seat Groups
One of the biggest mistakes families make is assuming: # “a car seat is a car seat.” 😅
But different ages and sizes require completely different seats.
According to Spanish car seat guidance:
- Group 0/0+ = newborn to approx 12-18 months 👶
- Group 1 = approx 1 to 4 years
- Group 2 = approx 4 to 6 years
- Group 3 = older children using boosters
And honestly… the amount of times families arrive expecting an infant seat and get handed a Group 2 booster is scary 😬
🇪🇸 Car Seat Laws In Spain
Spanish law requires children under 135cm to use an appropriate child restraint system.
Children should also normally travel:
- in the rear seats
- with the correct approved seat
- properly fitted for their:
- height
- age
- and weight.
Yes — this does mean your child legally needs a car seat for your journey from the airport 🚗👶
The only common exceptions are usually:
- public buses 🚌 or
- some larger shared transfer coaches where car seats cannot practically be installed.
For:
- taxis 🚕
- private transfers
- hire cars 🚙
- private vehicles
- and most other transport options
an appropriate child car seat is legally required.
That’s why it’s SO important to: ✔ plan ahead
✔ know what seat your child needs
✔ and not simply assume the seat provided will automatically be correct.
Especially after a long flight, many families understandably just want: # “to get to the hotel quickly.” 😅
But the airport journey is actually one of the MOST important parts of your holiday when it comes to child safety 💙
Rear-facing travel is also strongly recommended for younger children because it is significantly safer for babies and toddlers.
🚕 Taxis & Transfers In Tenerife
The Honest Reality
This is the part most families don’t realise 👇
In Spain: # taxi and transfer companies are NOT always required to provide car seats.
So while some companies DO offer them… it can honestly become:
- pot luck 🎲
- incorrect sizing
- poor fitting
- older seats
- or simply “whatever is available.”
And the problem is: most parents arriving from a flight are:
- tired 😴
- stressed
- managing luggage 🧳
- and often trust the seat they’re handed.
But unfortunately… that doesn’t always mean it’s correct.
🚙 Car Rental Companies
Another Common Family Issue
Most car rental companies DO offer child seats…
BUT:
- they’re often basic seats
- availability can vary massively
- and many simply provide “whatever seat is available.”
The reality? Many rental companies simply provide: # “a seat” 😅
not necessarily: # “the RIGHT seat.”
That’s a huge difference.
